How mental disorders are formed

Mental Disorder is a disease at the mind level. Like distress and disease, it is also caused by an imbalance in the Emotion-Body-Mind trio. The good news is that any simple, chronic or complex form of mental disorder is easy to reverse.

Based on the book – ‘Meditation The Cure’, where the complete science and techniques are detailed out for any patient (caregiver) to start reversing disorders at home, we have been helping patients overcome depression naturally and cure all kinds of disorders.

Here are the facts and science which trigger mental disorder in a person: –

  1. When an event(s) of your life has a bigger impact than your faith in life, it triggers disappointment. Disappointment if not grounded, leads to hopelessness.
  2. Hopelessness triggers negative emotions within, which the mind tries to control and keep inside.
  3. State of hopelessness kills curiosity, which means disconnection with mystery; leading a person to feel unattended and unsupported.
  4. At an energy level, this causes massive disruption to the flow of energy- the 7-chakra system.
  5. This requires the mind to work harder to keep energies and emotions in check.
  6. This disrupts breathing and starts to affect the chemistry of the body. This in turn affects sleep and sexuality.
  7. This is the state of imbalance in the spirit-body-mind trio.

It is difficult to overcome depression when faith is lacking in the patient.

Why faith is the key?

A strong mind can face the disappointments of life and still have the survival instinct. However, a holistic or artistic person, whose motivation does not lie in the routine and mundane survival, struggles with such disappointments in life and lands up suffering from mental disorder, in such situations. This is a slow and gradual process. Often one event is not enough to jumpstart the disorder. Grounding mechanism to let out the pressure plays a vital part in preventing disorder. Earlier, joint family, faith, and community provided us with that grounding mechanism.

Faith is trust in the unknown and trust is faith in the known

Faith in God is to have faith in the unknown. It has offered us the strength to trust the future. This meant trusting life in those moments when events created the “No-hope” situations.

Joint families or the support of family has always acted as insurance in such a situation. Family provided us with a supply of multiple layers of hope and love in such situations: this offered acceptance of self, even when we made mistakes. Imperfection was normal and the pressure to evolve and survive was not as much that it had the power to erode our faith in life and trust in ourselves.

What triggers mental disorders?

The few common examples for situations which trigger mental disorder are as follows:

  1. The pressure on a child to perform in academics and live up to the expectation of parents.
  2. Death of a loved one (i.e., grandparents, parents) at which you did not cry.
  3. Relationship break-ups or feeling stuck in a job, relationship, failure in clearing professional exams.
  4. Sexual /physical abuse
  5. Growing up, away from parents/ feeling rejected as a child.
  6. Alcoholic parent

This is where the seeds of disorders are sown in the system if no grounding mechanism is provided to release this pressure. Thus, it gets stored in the body and more of such events keep increasing, accumulating, and get stored inside. These, then imbalance the system, and to balance the stored energy within, disorder surfaces to stabilize self.

Every culture has rituals to deal with loss or pressure. In case of death in the family, India has a tradition of 13 days of grieving to ground oneself. Friends and society make sure everyone cries and releases the sadness. Religious, and spiritual chants and worship are designed to give wisdom to the grieving family to let go of attachment and restore faith in life.

If the time for grounding is not given, depression sets in. Depression is a state in which a person is making all efforts to balance between restoring faith in life and keeping pressure under control. It is the last attempt by the person to survive as a normal being.

For a person in depression, the slightest exposure of a negative nature may be strong enough to break the person’s survival instinct and set the path for a more serious mental disorder such as OCD, Bipolar Disorder, or Schizophrenia. If the ego is stronger, then to survive such losses or pressure, a person may get into another kind of disorder such as OCPD, anger disorder, hyperactive disorder, addiction to people, sex or substance, etc. or simply being destructive for self or others.

So, how can you overcome depression naturally? If one were to understand the science of breathing and follow techniques of meditation as developed by us, then in our experience, one would reach the root cause of the state of disorder and begin stabilizing and establishing a coherent balance within.

Nothing lives inside us without being fed by our breath.

While drawing our algorithm, we start with identifying our symptoms. Do we look at our symptoms of today or from our childhood? Our tendencies also seem like they are about today and not from our childhood. How should I interpret this?

You can start with identifying your symptoms today and make your Algorithm identifying your Lack, Tendency and Pattern. It may seem like the tendencies are loud and clear today. This is only because as an adult, you are either more aware of it, or the tendency is more pronounced. However, if you go back to that age group of 7-14, you will find that the same tendency existed back then as well.

For example – your lack is abandonment and so your tendency is need to prove/ excel. As an adult, you try extremely hard to prove yourself at work, but maybe as a ten-year-old you wanted to make sure that you win a colouring competition or feel worthy by collecting the maximum number of berries or fruits.

So, you would notice how the nature of tendency existed even back then – sometimes subtly, sometimes pronounced. It is just a matter of developing sensitivity to recognize it in that time and space. However, you can always work with current scenarios.

Now that I have made my algorithm and have identified my lack, what do I do with this? Do I have to re-visit my childhood?

In every moment of disappointment – current or past, you can experience the lack. There are two ways to attend to the lack, once identified –

  1.  You may simply keep your Algorithm/Lack in awareness by writing the events of the current time and go into breathing
  2. You can revisit your childhood and write about moments that you experienced the Lack/Algorithm and once you have written a few events (in detail), you may lay down and begin to observe your breath.

In either of the processes, your Algorithm/lack is in your complete awareness and observing your breath after this would only bring an expansion in your awareness.

After finding my LTP and mapping my algorithm, I can see how I have suffered in my childhood and continue to do so. What can I do to remedy this and reverse my suffering?

Since you are seeking the cure, you must know that state of meditation is the state of cure. The more you are in this state, the more you move towards light, thus curing your suffering.

All the things which come into your awareness, must now be attended to by Observing your breath. For process of attending to what has surfaced, refer to Ques no 8
