Anxiety

WHAT IS ANXIETY?

Anxiety is an emotion of the future.  We are never anxious about an event that has passed; our anxiety is  always about what is to come.

It is the state where our mind feels unstable and loses control on surviving.  And it is exactly in this moment that the mind tells you – ‘I must take control’. Resultantly, there is a massive conflict in a subtle yet impactful manner, between the uncontrollable emotions and the mind that fights in to take control.

The first experience of anxiety is in the form of worry. And every survivor in you and me is trained to tackle and cope with worry. This tackled worry, thus, remains unaddressed as an emotion and thus turns into anxiety over a period of time.

The Anxiety Spiral:  Anxiety to Panic. Panic to Disorder. And eventually paranoia – a severe state of mental disorder. You can now stop this spiral from growing and learn to cure yourself.

DO YOU KNOW WHEN IT STARTS BECOMING DISORDER?

We all have worry and a degree of anxiety and panic about one thing or another at some point of time. This does not necessarily mean we will be in state of paranoia someday. That someday is where it is destined to be, unless addressed.  It is a state of disorder because your normal functioning is affected by anxiety.

Let us take a few examples to reflect how quality of life, relationships and career are affected by simple anxiety; things which we ignore as normal –

  • You are waiting for the school bus to pick up your kid. And now, rather than continuing to feel joy, you get multiple thoughts about the safety of your child and make frantic calls or pace up and down.
  • You have a travel plan coming up in the next 30 days and with every passing day, you begin to feel rushed and think up work which needs to be done. The work at hand keeps getting derailed. And you continue to grow frantic, while pushing the ticket booking, itinerary planning and packing right unto to the last possible minute.
  • You have guests coming over on the weekend and are excited about the same. But with every hour, you begin to freeze over every aspect of entertaining them – be it simple housekeeping or the menu planning for the dinner or beginning to turn and look at every single thing which may not be up to the mark in your home.
  • You have a presentation to deliver at work and have great ideas for the same. But the nagging worry of failing client expectations keeps resulting in the loss of flow of thoughts. The ideas for the pitch get replaced with ideas of everything that could go wrong.

The joy of living is affected by such simple episodes of anxiety which if not addressed, hold the potential of the damaging relationships, careers or finally surfacing as disorder or disease.

WHERE IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF THIS DISORDER?

belief that I cannot trust or I need to control:

  • It has roots in the events of childhood.
  • Lack of faith in life or trust in self is the root cause of worry.
  • A simple event such as promise not delivered is enough to cause worry.
  • When expectation is not met, it is enough to cause worry.

Such belief remains in the subconscious. In the growingup years, when we face similar situations in relationship, career or with friends, where we have expectation or we are promised something, such belief from the subconscious get triggered to activate anxiety. At the root of every mental disorder is loss of trust. Anxiety is found to be common trigger behind depression, OCD, schizophrenia, anger disorder and sleep disorder.

While drawing our algorithm, we start with identifying our symptoms. Do we look at our symptoms of today or from our childhood? Our tendencies also seem like they are about today and not from our childhood. How should I interpret this?

You can start with identifying your symptoms today and make your Algorithm identifying your Lack, Tendency and Pattern. It may seem like the tendencies are loud and clear today. This is only because as an adult, you are either more aware of it, or the tendency is more pronounced. However, if you go back to that age group of 7-14, you will find that the same tendency existed back then as well.

For example – your lack is abandonment and so your tendency is need to prove/ excel. As an adult, you try extremely hard to prove yourself at work, but maybe as a ten-year-old you wanted to make sure that you win a colouring competition or feel worthy by collecting the maximum number of berries or fruits.

So, you would notice how the nature of tendency existed even back then – sometimes subtly, sometimes pronounced. It is just a matter of developing sensitivity to recognize it in that time and space. However, you can always work with current scenarios.

Now that I have made my algorithm and have identified my lack, what do I do with this? Do I have to re-visit my childhood?

In every moment of disappointment – current or past, you can experience the lack. There are two ways to attend to the lack, once identified –

  1.  You may simply keep your Algorithm/Lack in awareness by writing the events of the current time and go into breathing
  2. You can revisit your childhood and write about moments that you experienced the Lack/Algorithm and once you have written a few events (in detail), you may lay down and begin to observe your breath.

In either of the processes, your Algorithm/lack is in your complete awareness and observing your breath after this would only bring an expansion in your awareness.

After finding my LTP and mapping my algorithm, I can see how I have suffered in my childhood and continue to do so. What can I do to remedy this and reverse my suffering?

Since you are seeking the cure, you must know that state of meditation is the state of cure. The more you are in this state, the more you move towards light, thus curing your suffering.

All the things which come into your awareness, must now be attended to by Observing your breath. For process of attending to what has surfaced, refer to Ques no 8
